The King

Masterworks had a distinguished roster of musicians well before signing Gould, including Walter Gieseking, the great French-born Mozart and Debussy specialist, then experiencing a comeback years after his stay in Nazi Germany during the Second World War. Goddard Lieberson, head of classical music at Columbia during its glory years from the 1950s to the early 1970s, was adding artists who might attract interest beyond the classical market, including Leonard Bernstein, who was well on his way to becoming a household name, and Oscar Levant, a concert pianist-turned-comic who starred with Gene Kelly in An American in Paris, Vincente Minnelli’s 1951 musical. Columbia had also cornered the market on the Broadway musical soundtrack with Kiss Me Kate (1948) and South Pacific (1949), and with both the 1957 stage version of West Side Story and the 1961 film version of the Bernstein musical.
